Workshop: Julie Herring - how to make best use of your sketchbook

An excellent follow up to Julie’s club night demo.

Julie began by recapping the basic principles of composition, encouraging the use of thumbnails at the planning stage. She also showed us how to use card frames to crop the view and focus on the main point of interest. She also reminded us to consider whether to use the landscape or portrait format to support the composition. Those of you who attended Helen Talbot’s critique night would have found many of her points underlined by Julie!

After a brief introduction, Julie then worked intensively with each individual to advise on best ways to develop their ideas. Members worked either from pictures or their own drawings using watercolour and there was much discussion of technique.

A most helpful and supportive workshop - a real confidence-builder.
